The morning of socializing and reflecting will be based on the following writing of John Lazar:

Homosexuality is one of God’s most significant gifts to humanity. To be gay or lesbian is to have received a special blessing from God. All humans receive their own special graces from their creator, but God has chosen some to be gay and lesbian as a way of revealing something about God-self that heterosexuals do not.

This presentation is sponsored by Catholic religious community of men and women who believe that many churches are losing sight of the Gospel message of Jesus to love another, beginning with love of self. The Mission Statement for LGBT Ministry states:

Motivated by the Gospel’s call to justice and rooted in a spirituality of reconciliation, we follow Jesus’ example of inclusion by ensuring that all people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender have a place at the table.

                        This is accomplished by:

1.      Providing educational and spiritual opportunities that will result in dialogue and an increased understanding of the gift of human sexuality.

2. Creating safe spaces that invite and encourage dialogue fostering

relationships between people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and society and church institutions in order to decrease fear and increase compassionate understanding.

Day 2 of "Building a Show: Out of My Range." Rehearsal Date: January 12, 2013

We had an all day rehearsal on Saturday, January 12, 2013.  This is some of what came out of it.

First Installment of Building a Show: Out of My Range, Rehearsal Date: 01/08/2013

Our first year with a new director has been full of change...for the better.  There has been encouragement to think outside of the box.  "Out of My Range" is going to be a powerful experience.  Though it is humorous, the messages that I get from the show are powerful just as those in "Exile" and "Sing for the Cure."

I thought chronicling the building of our version of the show would be interesting.  The show itself centers around incorporating new members into a chorus and how those members interact.  So that's what this is...you get to see our chorus behind the scenes.  I am not a great cinematographer and I am continuing to learn.  The beginning clips are very different from what comes later on as I try to find balance between filming and rehearsing my part.  I sincerely hope you enjoy these efforts.

A Voice from the Chorus: Travis Zirkle

Many people have asked over the years who the guy is that always wears the dark glasses on stage.  That guy is Travis Zirkle.  The reason he wears the dark glasses is because his eyes are extremely sensitive to light.

Travis joined the chorus for the July 2007 concert "Back to Broadway" and has been singing with the chorus since then.  He was staff at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Wichita where the chorus was performing at the time when he saw the show "Extrabbaganza" and decided he wanted to be a part of the chorus.  He describes himself as a good choral singer but not really a soloist.  Lately, he has come out of his shell just a little and has performed a few small solos as well as singing a complete song, "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood," at the Gala Choruses Festival in Denver this last summer.  "I was so nervous, but my chorus mates were very supportive.  It was a great experience, but it could be a while before it is repeated."

Travis lives in Barnard, Kansas with Jeff Wallace, who is a HOAMC board member.  When they moved to Barnard from Wichita, neither could give up the chorus so they drive two hours each way every week for rehearsals and meetings.  The philosophy that Travis believes about music stems from his years as a manager and buyer for Tower Records in Los Angeles..."No Music...No Life!"

Artistic Staff of the HOAMC

Deanne Zogleman
Artistic Director/Conductor/Choreographer

Deanne is no stranger to choral music.  She is currently in her seventh year as Director of Music at Newman University where her select group, the NU Troubadours, have performed at Carnegie Hall three times in the past four years.  In her two years of teaching, she has gained recognition as a music educator and professional choreographer throughout the Midwest.  Each year, Deanne serves as a clinician; adjudicator; and director for music and drama festivals, various workshops, and show choir competitions all over the United States.  An award winning choreographer, Deanne choreographs for area colleges, several high school show choirs in the Midwest, and professional and high school theater productions in the area.  In her "spare" time, Deanne follows her passion as an award winning actress in the Wichita area and her greatest passion in the role of mother to Dalton and Sara Rose and wife to Jeff.

Thomas Grubb
Accompanist

Tom has been an integral part of Wichita's performing arts scene for over 35 years.  As an accompanist, he has worked with the Wichita Choral Society, Wichita Symphony Chorus, Wichita Chamber Chorale, Opera Kansas, and Music Theatre of Wichita.  As a chamber musician, he has appeared often with Chamber Music at the Barn as well as Plymouth's Chamber Series.  At WSU, Tom has worked with the Opera Theatre since 1976, and has served as instructor-lecturer for choral/vocal literature and opera/music theater courses.  His rich and varied performing career includes hundreds of concerts and recitals with students, faculty, and guest artists.  Tom enjoys his collaboration with the HOAMC artistic staff and chorus.

Carole Pracht
Accompanist

Carole Pracht is instructor of keyboard studies and choral studies assistant at Newman University. She is passionate about teaching piano and organ for performance success, personal expression, and creative and personal development.  Dedicated to excellence in church music, she has served as organist at St. Mary's Cathedral in Wichita for more than 35 years.  She is a frequent area performer, teacher, adjudicator, church music consultant and fan of music theater--"Music is Life!"
